What are fatty acids

Fatty acids are a group of long chained carboxylic acids which are involved in many biological functions. Certain types of fatty acids are called essential fatty acids (EFAs), since the body does not synthesize them and must be aquired through dietary sources. The fatty acids serve multiple vital biological functions such as energy storage, affecting inflammation and are vital for many cellular functions.

Analysis of fatty acids is useful in evaluating the nutritial intake and intestinal adsorption of fatty acids. Fatty acid profile can assess the balance between essential Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, which can indicate the need for supplementation and/or dietary modification. In addition, the fatty acid profile could be usefull in medicial/clinical studies in regards to inflammatory conditions, depression, cardiovascular risk and dietary issues.

We can perfrom fatty acid profiles in a vast variety of sample types such as:
  •  Blood samples (Serum/Plasma, Dried Blood Spots, Erythrocytes)
  • Tissues (Liver, intestines, muscle, nail)
  • Dietary fats (Egg, milk, oils)
